Google Acquires Redux, a Startup That Integrates Speakers into Smartphone Displays

It's not yet known when Alphabet - through an Ireland-based subsidiary of Google - bought the startup, but United Kingdom regulatory filings show that the transfer of shares was completed in mid-December.
Redux's said in 2017 that its patented bending wave techniques could allow it to turn a smartphone screen into a high-quality speaker.
The Verge tested startup's technology previous year on a tablet. The sound quality is said to be "decent".
Along with this, Redux can also use these vibrations to create haptic feedback when interacting with a display that tries to mimic the feel of touching buttons and moving sliders/dials. Mashable was able to show off a demonstration of the tech in action during MWC 2017. And displays with tactile feedback could offer a unique selling point for the company's devices - similar to Apple's pressure-sensitive "3D touch" iPhone screens. Redux has demoed the tech with a custom-built PC monitor. With Google's acquisition, that may change soon. That would surely help with any bezel-less ambitions Google might have with the Pixel line, seeing how the Pixel 2 XL trends in that direction, though the phone features two front-facing speakers. Google's decision to buy the company may accelerate that rollout, meaning we could see Redux's haptic sound technology come to a Google device later this year. It could also improve waterproofing for future phones since it eliminates the need for speaker holes. At the CES consumer electronics conference in Las Vegas this week, Google is heavily promoting its voice-controlled speakers that compete with Amazon.com Inc.'s Echo device.
Google has remained quiet on the acquisition of Redux.
