House Passes Bipartisan Bill To Stop Gun Violence In Schools – Does Nothing About Actual Gun Control
16 March, 2018, 02:41
While the bill was not without a few detractors, the Stop School Ciolence Act mostly sailed through the House with a 407 to 10 vote. Lois Frankel, Alcee Hastings and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and Republicans Carlos Curbelo, Mario Diaz-Balart, and Brian Mast voted for the measure.
Rep. John Rutherford, R-Fla., flanked by, Rep. Mike Bost R-Ill., left, and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., talks about his bill, the "STOP School Violence Act of 2018", which the House overwhelmingly approved to improve school safety, the first gun-related action by Congress since the shooting that left 17 dead at a Florida high school, at the Capitol in Washington, Wednesday, March 14, 2018.
"This is about schools but it's not just about schools", Rubio told reporters Tuesday at a news conference about the Senate version of the bill.
Representative John Rutherford, a Florida Republican and the bill's author, called it "an important first step forward in protecting our children, our teachers and other administrators within our schools".
"The bill sponsors worked with me on the language and I just wanted to return that courtesy", Tucker said.

The measure aims to prevent future attacks by helping to identify signs of potential violence through training and coordination between schools and law enforcement. "We sent legislation to the Senate in December".
While it's unclear whether the measure will pass in the Senate, the chamber indicated it was willing to support gun safety legislation on a bipartisan basis. "High school students are literally begging us to take action to get these guns off the streets and out of our schools".
One of the opponents on the House committee, state Rep. Clarke Tucker, D-Little Rock, said he was "a lot more comfortable" with the amended bill.
"Violence at schools makes students feel vulnerable in a place where they should feel safe".
"After today and after the next protest Congress will see how many people feel strongly about this so they will have to make a change", she said. "It is not enough to say that staff and students must do more to protect themselves".
The measure, however, would not allow any of the funding to be used for arming teachers or other school personnel.
The White House has come out in support of the bill, though it would like it amended so that it funds programs to arm teachers.
It also would authorize $25 million for schools to improve and harden their security, such as installing new locks, lights, metal detectors and panic buttons. Nadler, who voted in favor of the bill, further warned the legislation lacks due process protections for students against whom a report is made.
The legislation - passed the same day students in MI and across the nation staged walkouts and called for changes to us gun laws with stricter control - makes no mention of firearms or their use in schools.
"This bill does not include any provisions to strengthen our gun laws or to help keep guns out of the hands of those who should not possess them", he said.
