Facebook suspends about 200 apps that may have misused data

Facebook has suspended 200 apps from its platform for potentially misusing users' private data.

Earlier: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg could be formally summoned by UK Parliament, after the company's Chief Technology Officer, Mike Schroepfer, provided "unsatisfactory" answers at an inquiry into fake news.

Given that these were follow up questions to questions Mr Schroepfer previously failed to answer, we expected both detail and data, and in a number of cases got excuses.

And last week, he ordered the release of three Americans who had been held captive by his regime. He claims to have shut down a nuclear research facility that already was on its last legs.

Facebook has failed to fully answer 39 questions submitted by United Kingdom members of parliament that aim to explore the social network's approach to data privacy and fake news, according to the parliamentary committee charged with investigating the matter.

For the apps which raise concerns, Facebook plans to conduct interviews, seek information about them and the data they accessed, and carry out audits that may include on-site inspections. It added that it had taken action against 370,000 apps in 2017. Were these 200 apps chosen simply because they requested or acquired user data, or because Facebook already has evidence or suspicion that they held onto and sold the data?

"We have large teams of internal and external experts working hard to investigate these apps as quickly as possible", he said in a statement.

"Twitter has also made the policy decision to off-board advertising from all accounts owned and operated by Cambridge Analytica". A Cambridge Analytica spokesperson said the company used Twitter for political advertising but insisted that it had never "undertaken a project with GSR focusing on Twitter data and Cambridge Analytica has never received Twitter data from GSR". For those unaware, in 2014, Facebook had changed its policies to no longer allow developers accessibility to information of their app users' friends.

Though there have been a few instances of big advertisers pulling massive digital ad campaigns, they were primarily because of "lack of transparency around metrics used to measure the effectiveness of the campaign". Between 9 and 16 April, the Facebook Like button appeared on 8.4 million websites, the Share button on 931,000 websites, and there were 2.2 million Facebook Pixels installed, the biz said. "We were disappointed after providing a very significant amount of information to the committee at the last hearing the committee declared our response insufficient", wrote Stimson.
