Starbucks will close all of its more than 8,000 US stores for a portion of Tuesday afternoon so its employees can undergo racial bias and sensitivity training in the wake of a confrontation with two black customers at one of its Philadelphia locations. The Seattle-based chain ordered the training after the manager of a Philadelphia Starbucks called police April 12 to arrest two black men for trespassing because they were sitting in the store without placing an order.
Developed with feedback from the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Perception Institute and other social advocacy groups, Tuesday's four-hour session will give workers a primer on the history of civil rights from the 1960s to present day. The training will include a documentary film and video messages from Starbucks executives and rapper Common, as well as a discussion among store employees about their own experiences with bias.
Company-owned stores on Staten Island will be open until 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
