Audi CEO Rupert Stadler has been arrested on suspicion of fraud in relation to an emission scandal, which had marred its parent company Volkswagen's image.

He was later remanded in custody by a judge, they added.

Stadler was accused of fraud and false advertising by German prosecuters last week.

Audi confirmed the arrest to AFP, declining to give further details.

Vienna is a site under consideration for a potential meeting this summer, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said . Two anonymous sources told Buzzfeed that Trump made the remarks at a dinner during the G7 summit in Canada.

The Munich prosecutors said Stadler's arrest was not made at the behest of USA authorities. The drastic step was reportedly taken because prosecutors feared Stadler might suppress evidence in the investigation, Reuters reports. It goes to show customers are unfazed by what's going on with the emissions scandal, despite the fact that it has had a direct impact on owners as the company was forced to recall millions and millions of diesel-powered cars built by its many subsidiaries.

But Dudenhoeffer said VW's supervisory board may want to reconsider its stance when it meets today.

Until now German prosecutors have only questioned former VW CEO Dr. Martin Winterkorn.

A total of 20 people are under suspicion in the Audi probe, which focuses on cars sold in Europe that were believed to be equipped with software that turned emissions controls on during lab testing and off again during regular driving to enhance road performance.

Conway, meanwhile, claimed Democratic lawmakers are holding up funding that would allow the expansion of family detention centers. During an appearance on Meet the Press earlier in the day, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway applied the same tactic.

In November 2015 Audi admitted installing emissions defeat devices in its cars, and Audi's been pegged in several reports as the source of the initial defeat software responsible for Dieselgate.

It comes just a week after Volkswagen said it is being fined one billion euro (£880 million) by German authorities in connection with dieselgate.

Volkswagen declined 2.2% to €157.88 and traded 2% lower at 11.50am in local trading, extending losses this year to 5.2%.

The scandal has so far cost the VW group more than €25 billion (£22bn) in buybacks, fines and compensation.
