At the memorial, the names of the 72 people who died in the fire were read aloud, followed by the words "forever in our hearts".

The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government has claimed there has been an "unprecedented effort across government and our public services" in the year since the Grenfell Tower fire. It lasted 72 seconds - one second for each victim.

Mr Roncolato went on: "Grenfell Tower, had it been up to me and many other residents, it would not have been covered up the way it is, but we understand that it is very stressful to look at it continuously for the local community".

The display is one of a series of commemorations and vigils taking place this week as the public inquiry takes a step back.

Prime Minister Theresa May has also faced criticism, including over her government's hesitation to ban the cladding involved, after a report said that alone would not stop a repeat of the tragedy.

Merkel wars with Bavarian ally over plan to reverse her migrant policy
Last week, Merkel confronted the risk of losing the full support of her own CDU, many of whom support the CSU's tougher line. Merkel, who is in her fourth term as chancellor, has rarely found herself in such a precarious position.

May told parliament on Wednesday, June 13, that the "unimaginable tragedy remains at the forefront of our minds".

Yvette Williams, from campaign group Justice 4 Grenfell, said: "I think we kind of nearly move from "did it really happen at all?' to 'it feels like it happened yesterday", to looking at the struggles the bereaved families and survivors have had over the year (and realising) that it is actually a year".

The local community is still traumatized by the tragedy.

Alkarad added that it's been comforting to mourn with others who lost friends and family members in the blaze.

The fire, which broke out a year ago in the overnight hours in North Kensington, burned for about 24 hours.

A national minute's silence will take place at 12 p.m. on Thursday, with survivors and bereaved people expected to gather close to the charred tower.

The crowd cheered wildly when a London Underground train passing on tracks above stopped and sounded its horn, before the driver emerged from his cabin to unfurl a green flag.

As well as the minute's silence, a community mosaic is to be unveiled, while wreaths will be laid and candles lit.

The fire started through a faulty fridge in the kitchen of a 4th-floor flat in the 24-story tower.

Stephanie Seddon, 24, a health outreach worker who has been on the ground since last June, said "lots of people are showing signs and symptoms of PTSD", referring to post-traumatic stress disorder. My thoughts, and those of all us in Met, are with all those who died, the loved ones left behind, and all those who survived the fire that night.
