Pletnyova, chairwoman of the Family, Women, and Children Affairs Committee in the lower house of parliament, was quoted by Govorit Moskva radio as warning of a possible rise in the number of single mothers. "But the kids will suffer, just like they suffered [in 1980]", she said.

Asked if the World Cup could boost Russia's birth rate - a key goal for Putin - Pletneva replied: "We should be giving birth to our own children". "I am no nationalist but nevertheless". "Maybe there will be such girls or maybe not, I hope, maybe they will think better of it".

Tamara Pletnyova, head of the Family, Women and Children's Affairs committee, dropped this news some 24 hours before the biggest day of the year as Russian Federation began its duties as host of the World Cup.

"Even if they get married, they will take them away, then she does not know how to get back", Pletnyova said during a radio interview, according to The Telegraph.

Meanwhile the Argentinian soccer governing body caused a controversy in the leadup to the World Cup by encouraging men to try and seduce Russian women, including tips on how to do it in their official guide for visitors.

"The more love stories we have connected to the World Cup, the more people from different countries fall in love, the more children are born, the better", MP Mikhail Degtyaryov said on Thursday, Tass reported.

"As for our Russian women, they will make their own judgement", Mr Peskov said. "They are abandoned, and that's it, they stay here with mum".

The comments prompted criticism on social media, with some saying that Pletnyova's views were racist and archaic.

"Those who get harassed are probably the ones who want it themselves and give the occasion for it", she said in March, claiming that introducing laws in Russian Federation for the offense is "excessive".

More than 1.5 million tourists are expected to visit the country during the course of the one-month long tournament and the politician believes that the women of the country should be be cautious and prevent themselves from making love.
