The huge victory sends England to the quarters for the first time since 2006, but it did not come easy at all.

England finally overcame almost 30 years of penalty pain when they beat Colombia 4-3 in a shootout on Tuesday after drawing their World Cup last-16 clash 1-1 following extra time after the South Americans had equalized in the 93rd minute.

England could hardly believe it as they raced to celebrate their penalty shootout win over Colombia. But the truth is that that success tends to be overlooked, given what went before and has come since.

England will next play Sweden in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Fast forward 12 years and, although this wasn't quite as straightforward, England have now put an end to an unwanted record.

If Southgate wanted this World Cup to be a learning curve for his players - a finishing school at elite level - this bruising, argumentative, niggly match was perfectly designed for the goal.

The English players to have missed penalties are not really part of any exclusive club. While that is a concern, the management still departed heartened from the resilience and discipline displayed by his young team, not least in their reluctance to rise to Colombia's provocation during the 120 minutes. It was mixed emotions, highs and lows, even in the penalty shootouts. "(Radamel) Falcao is the only one who didn't go his way.

In an instant, the monkey was off England's back, and amid the fallout of this landmark victory came a sense that Southgate and his players may just be destined to make their mark here in Russian Federation.

"We are a better team than four years ago", Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina told The Guardian.

But Southgate has helped change the narrative.

"Missing my penalty [at Euro 96] will never be "off my back", sadly". We kept pushing during the extra time but, unfortunately, the penalty shootout didn't favor us. "I am proud of the discipline", he said. I keep going on about the spirit of the team.

But usually, they come at a price apart from adding more bulk to the handsets that we have to carry around in our pockets. A Mobile Airbag Kickstarter campaign will launch next month allowing interested buyers to fund the project.

Marcus Rashford also converted his penalty and after Jordan Henderson's effort was saved, the Tottenham Hotspur pair of Kieran Trippier and Eric Dier stepped up to beat David Ospina while Colombia's final two penalty-takers fluffed their lines. The Everton No. 1 admitted that it was not by chance that he made the crucial block. "Jordan Pickford - you LEGEND!"
