FERNANDO Alonso will vacate his seat at the McLaren Formula 1 team and cease racing in the sport at the end of this season. However, he hasn't ruled out returning to race for the team in the future.

He really has no reason to stay in Formula 1 anymore.

The Ricciardo talks were unsuccessful - earlier this month the Australian announced his shock move to Renault for next year, taking Sainz's place as Nico Hulkenberg's teammate in the process. Alonso has achieved race victories in the first two motor races.

Fortunately for Fernando Alonso, he wouldn't have to wait long for his turn to stand on the top step of the podium. He has amassed a total of 302 Grand Prix starts making him fourth on the all-time list.

The Renault driver had a clean get away and pulled away from the rest of the field. Will he return there in 2019 as he attempts to sweep motorsport's Triple Crown? "He's as hungry as ever to win".

But, Paul Ince has opined that Mourinho should instead sanction Pogba's sale, claiming that no player is bigger than the club. All he needs to speak about is the team and their performances, rather than himself.

In a statement announcing his upcoming retirement from Formula One, Alonso said: "After 17 wonderful years in this fantastic sport, it's time for me to make a change and move on".

The World Endurance Championship, which Alonso along with Toyota teammates Kazuki Nakajima and Sebastien Buemi now leads, continues this weekend with the 6 Hours of Silverstone.

The two-time Formula 1 World Champion published a video to social media overnight that features a love letter read to Formula 1 as if it were a person.

This season's switch by McLaren from uncompetitive Honda to the Renault powerplant had been aimed at restoring the team's fortunes and placating an increasingly frustrated Alonso.

He finished second in the world championship standings three times at Ferrari and rejoined McLaren in 2015.

As fate would have it, the then Ferrari driver ran out of fuel on his in lap and ended up stopping in front of his adoring Home fans - the flawless way to celebrate a ideal drive.

Formula One legend Fernando Alonso will leave Formula One after 17 seasons.

The two-time world champion has nearly single handedly built the Formula 1 fan base we see in Spain today and will undoubtedly be one of Spain's greatest talents.

He became F1 world champion in 2005 at the age of 24 years and 58 days - a record at the time, since surpassed by Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel - and retained the title in 2006.

McLaren's Spanish driver Fernando Alonso attends the German Formula One Grand Prix at the Hockenheim racing circuit on July 22, 2018 in Hockenheim, southern Germany.
