Apple has responded to the questions [PDF] by assuring authorities that they believe in that privacy is a fundamental human right, and all their products are created to minimize the collection of data from customers.

We have worked to design iOS and Apple apps so that the processing of information collected the microphone stays on the device where possible and the information is never shared with Apple or others unless the user takes action to do so.

"The App Review team reviews more than 100,000 submissions per week, and reject approximately 36,000 of those submissions", Apple's director of federal government affairs, Timothy Powderly, told the committee.

Furthermore, Apple addressed customer data usage as well, saying that it "does not and can not monitor what developers do with the customer data they have collected, or prevent the onward transfer of that data, nor do we have the ability to ensure a developer's compliance with their own privacy policies or local law".

"The customer is not our product, and our business model does not depend on collecting vast amounts of personally identifiable information to enrich targeted profiles marketed to advertisers", Powderly writes. Charles Grassley (R-IA), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. In the days following the scandal, Apple CEO Tim Cook made jabs at Facebook's loose rules governing how third-party developers could use personal information. The letter to Google's Page included references to reports claiming Android collects user location data and sends it back to Alphabet's Google, even if users disabled the device's location services beforehand. "Unlike other companies, Apple does not obtain a historical record of location data associated with a customer's name or AppleID for any of our services", he writes.

The tech giant also said they are committed to transparency on their data collection practices.

Apple responded with a letter of their own debunking the reports, while adding it does not allow third-party apps to listen in either. Lawmakers have questioned Apple's policies regarding privacy in the past, asking in 2017 about Apple's dealings with China over concerns it was complicit in assisting China's censorship-based regime.

"Not all technology companies operate in the same manner- in fact, the business models and data collection and use practices are often radically different from one another".
