Cathleen Taff, head of distribution for Disney, confirmed the film has been denied a release the Associated Press reported The move locks the release out from the world's second largest film market.

No reason has been given for the film's denial, but according to the Hollywood Reporter, it is because of China's censorship of Winnie the Pooh images that started past year.

Although no official reason has been given for Christopher Robin's banishment from China, which operates a strict quota on foreign film, the ban comes on the heels of "several Pooh crackdowns", says Sky News. A small number of people have even used Pooh as a symbol of resistance.

Hundreds evacuated from campsites as southern France hit by flash flooding

The uncanny connection between the two, first surfaced in 2013 when a picture of President Jinping walking along with former US President Barack Obama was posted alongside a picture of Winnie the Pooh and Tigger. The government responded by cracking down on images of the paunchy cartoon character. As comparisons grew, censors began erasing the images which mocked Xi.

"Taiwan's OhBear is dismayed at the ban slapped on his cousin Winnie's latest film by censors in China", it said, referring to its tourism mascot "Oh Bear".

The movie will be released in Malaysian cinemas on 16th August 2018.

In March, the Beijing International Film Festival pulled award-winging gay romance "Call Me By Your Name" from its programme, not long after the country's film regulator deemed LGBT content inappropriate, alongside content that includes bestiality.

The live-action/CGI tale stars Ewan McGregor as the human protagonist of A. A. Milne's series of children's tales, who returns to Hundred Acre Wood as an adult and reconnects with familiar characters such as Tigger, Piglet and Eeyore. Instead of restricting the audience age, the country opted to ban the film altogether because of nudity, violence and graphic language.
