'Earth Overshoot Day': How Humanity Is Living On Borrowed Time

Kristen Harrington | 03 August, 2018, 22:28

Todday, August 1, is Earth Overshoot Day, the moment in the year where humanity uses up more of the Earth's resources than the Earth produces in that year. In other words, we are living beyond our means. The "1.7 Earths" figure is an average of resource consumption across the planet.

They include reducing driving in cities, replacing auto trips with public transport, walking and biking, cutting carbon from energy production, reducing food waste by half, making diets more sustainable, and reducing the number of children families have. If everyone were Australian, 4.1 Earths would be needed. GFN said it takes 14 times more land to produce a ton of beef than a ton of grain, while pork production requires 1.9 times more. Global livestock contributes at least nine percent of manmade carbon emissions.

The earth pays the price of overusing natural resources of the world and each individual has a duty to stop it. Climate change, wildfires, untimely and unnatural rain fall, excessive heat, drought and floods are all the results of the over usage of natural resources.

Sanedi believes that if organisations and people can be informed, educated and committed to their contribution and steps to combat the overshoot impact on the planet, the date can be moved back several days through personal and organisational efforts.

But energy use is by far the main culprit: carbon use amounts to 60 percent of it, and barely 150 years ago this was non-existent.

The first one is to decrease the use of automobiles by 50 percent and the total traveled distance by 30 percent.
