Regarding the programme, NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine while interacting with the media said, "For the first time since 2011, we are on the verge of launching American astronauts on American rockets from American soil".

The American space agency said on August 3 that the astronauts will crew the first test flight and mission of both Boeing's CST-100 Starliner and SpaceX's Crew Dragon.

NASA awaits the completion of both companies' test flights before certifying either safe for use to return astronauts on low-Earth-orbit missions.

A Georgia Tech grad was named to the nine-member team of astronauts who are to serve aboard the first commercial crew flight tests of a spacecraft created to transport humans to the International Space Station and other low-orbit destinations. It was a pomp event that could herald a new era in NASA's history. According to him, this announcement advances the great American Vision and strengthens America's leadership in space. The group includes former space shuttle flyers, ex-military test pilots, rookies, and - critically - a cadre of four astronauts who've already been testing and providing feedback on the new commercial ships for years.

Victor Glover, 42, and Michael Hopkins, 49, will fly on the first operational mission of SpaceX's crewed Dragon.

With the start of four-person commercial missions, the International Space Station crew is slated to grow by one to a seven-person residency in order to maximize the science that can be conducted on board.

Since the shuttle was retired seven years ago, US astronauts have had to fly on Russian rockets from a remote launch site in Kazakhstan. Astronauts Sunita Williams, Doug Hurley, Bob Behnken and Eric Boe have spent the past three years working with Boeing and SpaceX on their commercial crew spaceships. But for what it's worth, SpaceX still has to receive NASA's human-rated safety certification for the Block 5 version of its Falcon 9 rocket, including propellant tanks that were redesigned in the wake of the 2016 explosion. Boeing said only that it would fly NASA's astronauts by sometime in the middle of next year.

U.S. astronauts now ride on Russian capsules to the space station, with NASA paying as much as $82 million a seat.

The Starliner's long-duration operational mission will be crewed by John Cassada, a Navy commander and experienced test pilot. NASA also said SpaceX will launch an uncrewed flight test in November, with Boeing not expected to do that until late in 2018 or in the early part of next year. Boeing and SpaceX were selected in September 2014 as the companies who would have the privilege to transport NASA's astronauts to the orbiting laboratory.

Currently, NASA and its astronauts rely on Russian rockets and crew capsules to get to and from the International Space Station.
