Malka Leifer arrives for a hearing at the District Court in Jerusalem earlier this year.

The former principal of an ultra-Orthodox girls' school in Melbourne is wanted on 74 charges of child sexual abuse in Australia. Rabbi Yitzchak Grossman previously claimed he would look after her if she was granted house arrest, telling the court that prison was "humiliating" for her.

On Tuesday, the Jerusalem District Court received the recommendation signed by the District Psychiatrist, which states that Leifer is mentally fit to face the court.

Judge Chana Lomp accepted the request and ordered Fried to submit his psychiatric assessment of Leifer by October 14.

The next extradition hearing is set for November 14.

Alleged victim Dassi Erlich was sitting with her sisters in Melbourne when the news broke.

Even if the 54-year-old accused loses this bid to avoid extradition back to Australia, it could be some time still before she faces her accusers with those pushing for her return expecting more legal battles ahead.

"It's been four years too long, but this is another step towards a conclusion we're all waiting to see", said Dassi Erlich, who called for a trial as soon as possible. Erlich wrote in a Facebook post.

She is alleged to have commit the offences between 2003 and 2008 when she was the principal of the Adass Yisroel in Melbourne.

She was arrested in February, after an undercover Israeli police investigation found she was fit to stand trial.

In March, the district court briefly considered releasing Leifer from police custody and into home detention.

The psychiatrist who completed the evaluation has since been taken off the case.

Her lawyer, Yehuda Fried, has vowed to bring a series of experts before the court to testify about her mental state, including from Australia.
