After spending the night with this woman, the only German victor of the Tour de France hit her and strangled her, authorities said.

Frankfurt police headquarters are pictured after former German cyclist and Tour de France victor Jan Ullrich was detained in Frankfurt, Germany, August 10, 2018.

Ullrich had allegedly called on the services of a prostitute at the five-star Villa Kennedy Hotel in Frankfurt, Bild daily reported.

Ullrich, the only German cyclist to ever win the Tour de France, is in police custody following the arrest early Friday morning.

Ullrich was under the influence of alcohol and drugs when police detained him on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm, the spokeswoman said. "Mr Ullrich is still in custody". Police said he argued with an "escort lady" and "physically attacked and injured her".

The woman needed medical treatment but police said no more details would be given on her health while they are still investigating.

In a recent interview with German magazine Bild, Mr Ullrich said he had been in "deep despair" since separating from his wife.

"The separation from Sara and distance from my children, whom I have not seen since Easter and have barely spoken to, have had a great effect on me".

"I have done and taken things as a result that I very much regret".

The former pro-cyclist had sought treatment after being detained on Mallorca last Friday over "forceful entry and threats" on his neighbour, German actor and film director Til Schweiger, in Palma de Majorca. In 2013, Ullrich admitted he had also received blood doping. "I took nothing that the others didn't also take", the 1997 Tour champion said then.
