With just days away from the final Grand Slam of the year, Williams says she's "not going in there thinking I'm going to lose", adding, "That's not being Serena".

Robert Edward Maxfield, then-25, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in 2006 for the death of Price and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, the Los Angeles Times reported at the time. He was granted parole in March for good behaviour.

However, nearly half a month after that 6-1, 6-0 loss, Serena opened up about what triggered that catastrophe in front of a crowd of 3,000 at San Jose State University.

In an interview with Time Magazine, the 23-time grand slam champion said she was scrolling through Instagram 10 minutes before her match and learned the killer had been released on parole.

Serena Williams recently suffered the heaviest defeat of her 23-year professional tennis career last month, and has claimed her poor performance was because she found out her half sister's murderer had been released from prison just moments before she was due to compete.

"It was hard because all I think about is her kids", Williams said.

Price had three children who were aged 11, nine and five when she died aged 31. "No matter what, my sister is not coming back for good behavior", she says. "But also ..." she paused briefly before continuing, "the Bible talks about forgiveness".

As for forgiving Maxfield, she isn't there yet.
