President Trump said Wednesday that tariffs are propelling the U.S.to better trade deals, defending his trade wars amid a new round of strong economic reports from the government.

China has filed a complaint at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) against the US' 30% safeguard tariffs on solar imports as well as its renewable energy subsidies, claiming that they distort the global PV market - a move which comes as part of wider trade battle between the two global powers.

The White House announced plans for "safeguard tariffs" over four years in January, starting at 30 per cent and incrementally falling to 15 per cent.

One Chinese executive, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that US solar tariffs were a "sideshow" and had little effect on Chinese business. "I think China chose to bring it up in order to keep up the rhythm of the trade dispute", he said.

The United States has accused China of using subsidies and bulk manufacturing capacity to drive down prices and put USA competitors out of business.
