Three Japanese auto giants admit using fake vehicle emission data

Rhonda Young | 09 August, 2018, 15:21

Mazda Motor Corp, Suzuki Motor Corp and Yamaha Motor Co conducted improper fuel economy and emissions tests on their vehicles, Japan's transport ministry said on Thursday.

The report is the latest episode in a growing list of data falsifications that have tarnished the image of Japan's manufacturing industry, known for its high-quality and efficient production.

Suzuki, Mazda and Yamaha have admitted using falsified emissions data to inspect their new vehicles after the government ordered the industry to review its procedures. The ministry looked at tests conducted over different periods at all three automakers.

Everton on the verge of signing Bernard
He has been capped 14 times by Brazil and was offered to Chelsea , Inter Milan, AC Milan and West Ham United in recent weeks. Bernard could move outside the transfer window system though due to his status as a free agent.

The conduct of automakers globally has come under intense scrutiny after Germany's Volkswagen AG admitted in 2015 to installing secret software in hundreds of thousands of US diesel cars to cheat exhaust emissions tests, and that as many as 11 million vehicles could have similar software installed worldwide.

They said incomplete emissions tests were done on some of its vehicles, but its officials certified the results as though the tests had been administered properly. However, the company is not considering product recall at this moment. Improper inspections happened less often at the other two - 2.1 per cent of 335 motorbikes inspected in the last two years at Yamaha and 3.8 per cent of 1875 vehicles inspected at Mazda over the past four years, the ministry said in a statement.

Yamaha also confirmed it carried out inappropriate testing and apologized. Mazda said it would hold a news conference later in the day.

At Mazda, of 1,875 cars subject to the sampling inspection, improper inspections were discovered in almost 4 percent since November 2014.

In July, Nissan admitted data on exhaust emissions and fuel economy had been "altered" for some of its vehicles, and a year ago the firm was forced to recall more than a million vehicles after admitting staff without proper authorisation had carried out some inspections.

The quality-control data falsifications have embroiled Kobe Steel Ltd. and Mitsubishi Materials Corp.
