Trump axes security clearance for former Central Intelligence Agency director Brennan

Trump revokes clearance of former CIA chief Brennan Former CIA Director John Brennan

Russian Federation had used active measures to interfere in Western democracies before the 2016 election, and Brennan said Americans watched Trump publicly encourage those efforts in real time during the campaign.

The vocal critic of the president can no longer access sensitive information.

He added: "This action is part of a broader effort by Mr Trump to suppress freedom of speech and punish critics".

That may not necessarily be a legal problem for Trump, given that it's not directly tied to special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's obstruction-of-justice investigation and that Brennan has no role in the probe today. He is also one of the chief architects of the narrative that Russian Federation was interfering in the 2016 election to ensure that Donald Trump was elected President, and since leaving office he has tweeted attacks that match Mr. Trump's for intemperance.

Mr Brennan, who served as Central Intelligence Agency director between 2013 and 2017, has become an outspoken Trump critic.

Trump announced the decision in a statement from him read by White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders at her daily news briefing.

Taliban militants overrun Afghan army base, capture dozens of soldiers
Washington neither confirmed nor denied the meeting, but acknowledged Wells was in Qatar, where the Taliban maintain an office. The Taliban say they met with Alice Wells, the top US diplomat for South Asia, in Qatar last month for preliminary talks.

In the Journal interview, Trump said he was prepared to yank Brennan's clearance last week but that it was too "hectic".

"I call it the rigged witch hunt; [it] is a sham", Trump told the Journal's Peter Nicholas and Michael C. Bender.

What did Trump's statement say exactly?

The veteran USA intelligence official is a former director of the National Security Agency, principal deputy director of national intelligence and a past CIA director.

What has the reaction been?

In its announcement, the White House did not point to any specific evidence that Brennan had divulged classified information - furthering the notion that the president was simply engaging in retaliation.

"My principles are worth far more than clearances", he added". I'm taking bets. How much will the inevitable John Brennan GoFundMe raise in ResistanceBucks?

Turkey's lira is rallying after a $15 billion loan from Qatar
Following the latest announcement, Turkey's presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin has called on the U.S.to engage in diplomacy. The decree will raise tariffs on American vehicle imports by 120-percent, alcohol by 140-percent and tobacco by 60-percent.

James Comey called the president "morally unfit" to lead.

Mr. Trump's claims of no collusion are, in a word, hogwash.

"When they had these security clearances. they didn't stop the Russians, they didn't stop the Red Chinese [or the] Iranians", he said.

"Mr. Brennan's lying and recent conduct, characterized by increasingly frenzied commentary, is wholly inconsistent with access to the Nation's most closely held secrets and facilitates the very aim of our adversaries, which is to sow division and chaos", the statement said.

What needs to be borne in mind in all this is, as former FBI Director James Comey himself has admitted: "I was making decisions in an environment where Hillary Clinton was sure to be the next president".

"I don't see why he would need a security clearance, I really don't", he told CNN.

FIFA Ranking: France top new ladder as Germany & Argentina flop
The Republic of Ireland re-entered the top 30 - climbing two spots to 29th, with Scotland also up two in taking 40th in the list. England have moved up to sixth in the FIFA World Rankings after reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup.

John Brennan has been an outspoken critic of the president.
