As Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland arrived back in Washington, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned of what he termed "massive disruption" and job loses on both sides of the border if Washington follows through on threats to impose auto tariffs.

Canada's foreign minister is to be in Saskatoon on Wednesday to update her fellow caucus members on the ongoing negotiations. U.S. President Donald Trump, who has said he is prepared to tear up NAFTA, has struck a bilateral trade deal with Mexico and threatened to push ahead without Canada.

US and Canadian trade representatives are set to meet this week to advance NAFTA negotiations between the two countries.

As foreboding skies belied national worry over a new threat, a monstrous hurricane menacing the US east coast, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland cited the memory of 9/11 as evidence of deep and friendly ties that have long bound the two countries together.

"President, I recommend we accept this deal with Canada; it's not flawless, but it's a good deal, ' then I think he takes it,"' Mulroney said.

Although issues related to autos, such as the USA push to boost North American content in vehicles, have been a major part of the negotiations, other issues, particularly a desire for more US access to Canada's dairy market and Canadian insistence on maintaining NAFTA's dispute resolution system, are believed to be some of the major remaining sticking points. "There are nearly two dozen chapters closed" in the NAFTA deal including reducing red tape on cross-border trade, he said on Monday.

The renegotiation of the 24-year-old NAFTA, which also includes Mexico and is integral to the continent's economy, has dragged on for 13 months.

"Without Chapter 19, NAFTA is utterly useless as it would subject Canada and Mexico to the vagaries of the US political system and its courts when determining trade policy actions", said Derek Holt, vice-president at Scotiabank Economics, in a note recently.

Freeland also appeared at the women's summit Monday, while Lighthizer was overseas to meet with European Union Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom.

He added that the Office of the United States Trade Representative wants to wrap up talks with Canada quickly. Trump wanted changes that would destroy family farms across Canada, he said.

Climate extremes key driver behind rising global hunger
The U.N. report went on find a direct correlation between countries "hit hardest by extreme weather events" and hunger. Staple crops such as wheat, rice and maize are particularly at risk from climate extremes .

She has declined to discuss specifics about the talks, noting she and Lighthizer have agreed to refrain from negotiating in public. "They did some very hard work and the discussions over the weekend were, as they were at the beginning of this process, constructive and productive, and we decided it would be a good idea to have a meeting today".
