US government considers ban on flavored e-cigarettes over youth 'epidemic'
14 September, 2018, 12:24
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is giving vaping companies 60 days to figure out how to reverse what it's calling an epidemic of youth usage, or risk having some of their products potentially pulled from the market.
WASH/LA-The Food and Drug Administration said on September 12-they are considering a ban on flavored e-cigarettes in response to an "epidemic" of young people using e-cigarettes, the agency's leader said.
"While we remain committed to advancing policies that promote the potential of e-cigarettes to help adult smokers move away from combustible cigarettes, that work can't come at the expense of kids", Gottlieb said.
Youth vaping is an "epidemic", as far as the FDA is concerned, and if manufacturers don't submit "robust" plans to prevent kids from getting their hands on flavored e-cigarettes, the agency will take action-possibly going so far as to order the flavored products off the shelves.

There are simply too many users and too many posts to lay content moderation exclusively on the shoulders of human workers. To handle the task, the company has now designed a very sophisticated artificial intelligence which is known as Rosetta.
These levels of nicotine are highly addictive, particularly to the developing brains of children and teenagers.
It will also "re-visit" the policy it announced a year ago, which gave e-cigarette companies more time to apply for regulatory approval.
"I've been warning the e-cigarette industry for more than a year that they needed to do much more to stem the youth trends", he said. "Hindsight, and the data that's now available to us, fully reveal these trends".
In its enforcement action, the FDA recently sent nearly 1,200 letters to brick-and-mortar stores and online retailers warning them that they could face penalties for allegedly selling e-cigarettes to people under 18. They noted the survey did not ask specifically about Juul, a sleek, heavily-marketed e-cigarette brand that exploded onto the market and accounts for 70 percent of US sales, according to analyst estimates. The FDA's delay on that requirement has allowed the industry to flourish with little oversight. But the agency also thinks ENDS makers should consider "revising your current marketing practices to help prevent use by minors" and "removing flavored products from the market until those products can be reviewed by FDA as part of a [pre-market approval application]". Yet while Big Tobacco has developed some of its own e-cigarette options and alternative products, none have been as successful as privately held Juul, which sold $1.3 billion in vape kits and nicotine pods over the 12 months ended Aug 11. Youth tobacco prevention is a priority for our companies.

In addition, the FDA on Wednesday issued 12 warning letters to online retailers for selling misleadingly labeled and/or advertised e-liquids resembling kid-friendly food products such as candy and cookies.
Now, Gottlieb is coordinating the largest scale initiative to enforce regulations against selling e-cigarettes to-date.
The FDA is in the process of rolling out a sweeping anti-smoking initiative created to make it easier for smokers to quit by cutting the nicotine levels in regular cigarettes. The companies insist that the flavors are critical to helping nicotine-addicted adult smokers switch from conventional cigarettes.
"In my view, they treated these issues like a public relations challenge rather than seriously considering their legal obligations, the public health mandate, and the existential threat to these products". "And they [teens] have adopted it", Gould said.
