Tropical Storm Florence dumped "epic" amounts of rain on North and SC as it trudged inland on Saturday, triggering risky flooding, toppling trees, cutting power to almost a million homes and businesses while causing at least five deaths.

Authorities on Saturday warned residents displaced by a killer hurricane that its devastation was far from over, as Florence dumped "epic amounts of rainfall" across the southeastern United States, bringing catastrophic flooding.

Already, more than 2 feet (60 centimeters) of rain has fallen in places, and forecasters saying there could be an additional 1½ feet (45 centimeters) before Sunday is out.

National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said radar and rain gauges indicated some areas got as much as 2½ feet of rain, which he called "absolutely staggering".

Florence peaked at a terrifying Category 4 with top winds of 140 mph over warm ocean water before making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15am at Wrightsville Beach, a few miles east of Wilmington and not far from the SC line.

If Florence doesn't wipe out oceanfront homes on stilts along the Carolinas coast, rising sea levels will. Florence lashed low-lying barrier islands that experience some of the fastest rates of sea level rise observed anywhere in the world, almost an inch (2.5 centimeters) a year.

"If you are refusing to leave during this mandatory evacuation, you need to do things like notify your legal next of kin because the loss of life is very, very possible", Mayor Mitch Colvin said at a news conference.

Cowan said he anxious that the floods would destroy numerous crops that drive the local agricultural economy.

Over 895,000 without power as Florence batters Carolinas
Grey clouds hovered over the stadium, with the wind picking up enough to blow around papers and knock ballcaps off heads. The swift-water rescues on Saturday morning were mostly of people who hadn't heeded those orders, said Burgaw Fire Capt.

"Bottom line, tonight, it is just as bad as it was 12 hours ago and it is expected to continue for another 12-24 hours", Begnaud said.

Forecasters say the center of the eye of Florence has made landfall near Wrightsville, North Carolina. Its forward movement was 6 miles per hour (9 kph).

Rescuers are working hastily to save those caught in rising flood waters as thousands of people living near North Carolina's rising rivers were ordered to evacuate Saturday.

Storm Florence has battered the eastern U.S. coast with non-stop rain, surging seawater and howling winds.

And weather officials said more is coming, labeling as "extreme" the impacts from storm surge and flash flooding.

None of the people rescued were injured.

Downgraded to a Tropical Storm, its core is now drifting westward over SC, threatening more flash floods and major river flooding. Sutton was retired in 2013 and the company has been excavating ash to remove to safer lined landfills. The gray ash left behind when coal is burned contains toxic heavy metals, including arsenic, lead and mercury.

New Bern spokeswoman Colleen Roberts said 455 people were safely rescued in the town of 30,000 residents.

Authorities in SC reported one death, saying a woman was killed when her vehicle struck a fallen tree.

Florence pounded away at the coast with torrential downpours and surging seas, rescue crews used boats to reach more than 360 people besieged by rising waters in New Bern, while many of their neighbours awaited help.

In North Carolina, the mother and her baby were killed in New Hanover County when a tree fell on their house, Cooper said late Friday.

The White House said yesterday President Donald Trump had approved making federal funding available in some counties.

Rescued families were delivered to shelters, where approximately 20,000 people across the state were housed on Saturday. The southeast town of Newport, N.C., reported a rainfall total of nearly 24 inches as of midnight Saturday.

The storm is expected to turn west and then north moving through the Carolinas and the Ohio Valley by Monday, the NHC said early on Saturday.

The hurricane center said the storm will eventually break up over the southern Appalachians and make a right hook to the northeast, its rainy remnants moving into the mid-Atlantic states and New England by the middle of next week.
