Hurricane Florence rolled ashore in North Carolina with howling 90 miles per hour winds and terrifying storm surge early Friday, trapping hundreds of people in high water as it settled in for what could be a long and extraordinarily destructive drenching.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence will eventually make a right hook to the northeast over the southern Appalachians, moving into the mid-Atlantic states and New England as a tropical depression by the middle of next week.

Florence made landfall near Wrightsville Beach at around 7:15 a.m. EST.

Its storm surge and the prospect of 1 to 3½ feet of rain were considered a bigger threat than its winds, which had dropped off from an alarming 140 miles per hour - Category 4 - earlier in the week.

The barrier island of Emerald Isle is under water, with ocean waves rolling in over a six-foot storm surge and crashing into homes.

Florence's center may linger for another whole day along the Carolinas' coast - punishing homes with crushing winds and floods and endangering those who've stayed behind.

Forecasters say "it can not be emphasized enough that the most serious hazard associated with slow-moving Florence is extremely heavy rainfall, which will cause disastrous flooding that will be spreading inland".

Hundreds of people had to be rescued in New Bern, North Carolina, as they called for help overnight, city officials said. But Florence's forward movement had slowed to a crawl, and it piled on the rain in a siege that could go on all weekend long.

Downgraded but unsafe: Though now a Category 1 storm, hurricane-force winds extend 80 miles from Florence's center, and it will linger for days, with prolonged winds and rain making it more risky.

More than 60 people had to be pulled from a collapsing motel at the height of the storm, and many more who defied evacuation orders held out hope of being rescued.

The worst of the storm's fury had yet to reach coastal SC, where emergency managers said it was not too late for people to get out. Roof shingles were peeled off a hotel.

None of the people rescued were injured.

North Carolina alone is forecast to get 9.6 trillion gallons, enough to cover the Tar Heel state to a depth of about 10 inches (25 centimeters). "You're going to have flooding miles and miles inland", the center's director, Ken Graham, said.

"The fact is this storm is deadly and we know we are days away from an ending", Cooper said.

"You can't get over till we have power and we have sewer up and running", said the retired teacher and real estate agent, who rode out the hurricane in an inland hotel.

The National Hurricane Center says the eyewall of Hurricane Florence is beginning to reach the North Carolina coast.

As of 7:30 a.m. EST, 402,974 residents were experiencing power outages, according to the North Carolina Department of Safety.

Even though it has downgraded from hurricane strength after making landfall, the storm had killed at least five people till now.

Video reports from several towns in the Carolinas showed emergency personnel wading through thigh-high water in residential neighborhoods.
