Americans will get a text alert from President Trump next week. It's only a test.

People will get test text from the Wireless Emergency Alerts system for the first time on Thursday, Sept. 20.

The WEA system is already used to warn the public about missing children, risky weather and other vital information, FEMA said.

We don't actually know if the president will send the text himself, but it will have a headline that says "Presidential Alert".

The national test of the presidential alerts will use the same tone and vibration associated with other WEA alerts such as tornado warnings or AMBER Alerts.

When the test happens at 1:18 p.m. central time on September 20, people will hear a tone twice followed by a vibration and the message: "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System". It is part of a nationwide test by the Federal Emergency Management Agency of Wireless Emergency Alerts systems to assess its effectiveness.

The test will go out to participating wireless phone company customers whose phones are turned on and within range of an active cell tower.

"If you separate this from the politics and personality of any individual president then this is a great idea and an wonderful use of technology to reach everybody if they're in harms way", said Karen North, director of the Annenberg Digital Social Media program at the University of Southern California.

Next Thursday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency will do its first test of a system that allows the president to send a message to most USA cellphones.

You don't need to take any action for the test.

You've probably already heard of the Emergency Alert System, which sends a national public warning via radio and television in the event of an emergency and conducts periodic tests.

According to Jeremy Zidek, spokesperson for DHS&EM, this will be the first time that a nation-wide WEA message will be distributed.
