Under its new deal with Mexico - which Trump has urged Canada to sign - the US says there's an agreement on provisions that include 10 years of data protection for biologic drugs and an expanded list of products that are eligible for protection. When the Canada, Mexico, and the United States started renegotiating NAFTA several months back, the Trump administration insisted a new NAFTA agreement should automatically expire after five years.

The sticking points between Ottawa and Washington centre on Canada's managed dairy market - something Mr. Trump has criticised frequently - and how to handle some disputes among NAFTA partners, as well as patent protections for medicines.

"A media leak of an off-the-record comment by U.S. President Donald Trump about Canada has rocked the ongoing NAFTA talks in Washington, but officials say negotiations will resume next week after the two sides missed the Friday deadline". The president said he wanted the remarks to remain off-the-record, otherwise "it's going to be so insulting they're not going to be able to make a deal".

Mr Trump has threatened to levy tariffs on auto parts exported from Canada to the U.S. if a deal is not reached.

The remark, made off the record in an interview Thursday with Bloomberg News, was reported by The Toronto Star.

Here’s What You Need To Know: John McCain’s Funeral Schedule
Mr Trump came under criticism on Monday for too hastily raising the White House flag from half-mast after Mr McCain's death. McCain's family, including his 106-year-old mother, was there for his memorial service in the rotunda.

Some U.S. lawmakers and business groups expressed concern about Canada's not yet being not yet part of the agreement. The deal also proposes requiring a significant portion of automobile parts - 75 percent - be made in the US and Mexico.

Wait a minute ... why is the Star reporting on comments Trump allegedly made to another outlet?

U.S. officials said they would meet their Canadian counterparts again next week in an effort to reach agreement. "And we're working hard to find that win-win space".

"Canada will only sign a deal that is a good deal for Canada", she said.

The Canadian dollar CAD= weakened to C$1.3081 to the US dollar after news of the talks' lack of a result first broke. Lighthizer said on Monday that Mexico had agreed to eliminate the mechanism. The U.S. president has repeatedly criticized Canada's "unfair treatment" of American dairy farmers - even though the United States has a surplus in dairy trade with Canada.

Ottawa has stood firm against signing "just any deal", with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying, "We will only sign a deal if it is a good deal for Canada". "I think people have noticed that our government's approach is always to stay constructive, positive, to engage on the substance of issues and to demonstrate that we understand that the path forward is a win-win-win on all sides", he said. But Canada's dairy industry - backed by Quebec politicians of all stripes - is adamant that it won't stand for the government allowing the US any more market access, saying it has compromised enough on past trade deals with the European Union and Pacific Rim countries.

In another remark he did not want published, Trump said the deal would be "totally on our terms" and reportedly suggested he had tried to spook the Canadians with the threat of auto tariffs.

"I spoke to him yesterday, we had a very good talk, I spoke with him multiple times", said the President.

Lighthizer has refused to budge despite repeated efforts by Freeland to offer some dairy concessions to maintain the Chapter 19 independent trade dispute resolution mechanism in NAFTA, The Globe and Mail reported on Friday.
