James Murdoch had been chairman of Sky since April 2016, having previously served as chief executive from 2003 to 2007 and in a previous spell as chairman from 2007 to 2012.

Team Sky have declined to comment on the takeover of backers Sky plc by United States cable giant Comcast, but insiders said they were confident the team would be unaffected.

Critics had argued that allowing Murdoch - who owns major British newspaper titles The Times and The Sun - full control of Sky News would have given him too much influence in the United Kingdom news business.

They include John Nallen, Chase Carey, Martin Gilbert, Andy Sukawaty, Tracy Clarke and Katrin Wehr-Seiter.

Over the weekend, culture secretary Jeremy Wright reaffirmed his statement that Sky News would need to retain its editorial independence under new ownership, a request which Roberts said he would keep to. Comcast now owns more than 75% of the European pay-TV giant.

Insiders, however, insist Team Sky have always been more Jeremy Darroch's project than Murdoch's - Darroch is the chief executive of Sky plc - and they say their understanding is that the team will be allowed to continue do their jobs.

The group tabled a £30 billion bid for Sky, dwarfing Fox's bid by a distance.

Addressing concerns about whether Sky's news platform, Sky News, will maintain editorial independence following the acquisition, the CEO added, "We are also fully committed to ensuring Sky News' future, maintaining its editorial independence, and preserving its strong track record for trusted, high quality, impartial news".

Details of Juventus's deal for Aaron Ramsey revealed
We thought we were in a position where we had agreed a deal but that's no longer the case. Ramsey added: "That's a decision [Arsenal] have made and things happen in football ".

"We wish Comcast had not acquired Sky", analysts with the New Street research firm wrote on Friday in a note to investors.

Sky News will benefit greatly from Comcast's funding commitments over the coming years and the arrangements that will be put in place to preserve and enhance its editorial independence.

The closing moves its acquisition of the United Kingdom broadcaster a step closer to completion; Sky's listing on the London Stock Exchange will be cancelled on 7 November.
