Denis Mukwege is a medic based in the Democratic Republic of Congo and he and his staff have helped thousands of victims abused in its prolonged and bloody wars - and many more forcibly removed people besides.

The prize's announcement text noted Murad's "uncommon courage in recounting her own sufferings" and praised her work for "speaking up on behalf of other victims".

The Nobel Peace Prize of 2018 has been jointly awarded to Nadia Murad and Dr Denis Mukegwe for their efforts in combating sexual violence.

United Nations rights chief Michelle Bachelet said it was "hard to imagine two more worthy winners", describing the prize as "richly-deserved recognition of two extraordinarily courageous, persistent and effective campaigners".

The peace prize was the first Nobel ever awarded to a Congolese, sparking joy and pride in the biggest country in sub-Saharan Africa. She was repeatedly raped and spent approximately one month in captivity.

She was 21 when IS militants attacked her village in northern Iraq, close to the border with Syria.

In this Monday, May 22, 2017 file photo, Human rights activist Nadia Murad speaks during an interview with The Associated Press at the International Center in Vienna, Austria.

Human Rights Watch says armed groups and members of the Congolese army commit sexual violence against women and girls, and some men and boys, as a way to "punish" those belonging to a certain ethnic group or those they believe are helping the "enemy".

Since escaping, Murad has demanded that global leaders acknowledge and fight against the abuse of women like her, speaking to the United Nations Security Council, the U.S. House of Representatives, the British House of Commons, and the U.S. State Department-which recognized the genocide of the Yazidi people following her appeal.

One day in August that year, pickup trucks bearing the black flag of the extremists swept into her village, Kocho. The militants killed those who refused to convert to Islam, including six of her brothers and her mother.

Mukwege and Murad will share the prestigious prize of a gold medal, a diploma and a cheque for nine million Swedish kronor - nearly $1 million or 863,000 euros.

The winners receive their prizes at a ceremony on December 10th - the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel.

Although there is no strict rule as to when the name of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate will be announced, the established custom is to make the announcement on the Friday of the first full week of October.

Some recent awards have been controversial: former U.S. president Barack Obama won in 2009 after less than a year in office, and the European Union won in 2012.

Last year's prize was awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
