From #Beers4Brett to base misogyny - how the right celebrated Kavanaugh’s confirmation

US Senate confirms Judge Brett Kavanaugh for Supreme Court “Shame on you!”: Protesters, Democrats react to Kavanaugh confirmation

"But we also had a case where Judge Kavanaugh came forward and said, 'I'm 100 percent certain that this did not happen, ' so here you have two people who are each 100 percent certain of what they're saying under pain of perjury".

As the senators voted, protesters in the Senate gallery screamed, "I do not consent", and, "shame", forcing Vice President Mike Pence, who was presiding over the chamber, to repeatedly call for order.

But Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, claimed the confrontation would turn out to his party's advantage.

However, early September an American professor of psychology Christine Blasey Ford had accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault leading to a wrenching debate that captivated the attention of many.

Two other women accused him in the media of sexual misconduct in the 1980s. Kavanaugh has denied all allegations.

The Time's Up campaign praised a turning tide in USA attitudes, but said "it's heartbreaking but not surprising that this small group of largely white men made a decision that valued the career of one man above all else". "If they won't listen to our voices, then they'll listen to our vote". All those fellas and ME senator Susan Collins, that is, whose support of Kavanaugh gave him one of the clinching votes he needed to assume the gig.

Canada gains 63000 jobs in September, unemployment rate falls
Numerous jobs were found in construction, up by 28,000 in September, reversing two previous monthly declines. The agriculture sector also saw gains of about 9,000 jobs, offsetting continuous declines seen since May.

The confirmation will mark a major victory for President Donald Trump, who will soon be able to take credit for appointing two conservative justices to the Supreme Court during his relatively brief time in office so far and possibly create a conservative majority on the bench for a generation.

Republicans control the Senate by a meager 51-49 margin, and announcements of support Friday from Republicans Jeff Flake of Arizona and Susan Collins of ME, along with Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia, locked in the needed votes.

Besides the accusations of sexual misconduct, another issue - abortion rights - mobilised the opposition to Kavanaugh.

With next month's crucial mid-term elections on the horizon, analysts will be looking to see whether it influences the vote.

Several polls show that Republican enthusiasm about voting, which had lagged behind, jumped after the Kavanaugh hearing last week.

Lisa Murkowski of Alaska was the only Republican who did not vote to confirm; rather than a "no" vote, she voted "present".

Within hours of the Senate vote on Saturday 50 to 48 in his favour, Kavanaugh was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts, solidifying the conservative majority in the nation's top court.

"In nominating Judge Kavanaugh, President Trump kept his word to the American people to appoint judges who will interpret the Constitution as written and uphold the God-given liberties enshrined there".

Sen. Susan Collins said Saturday that while she believes that Dr. Christine Blasey Ford was sexually assaulted, she does not believe that now-confirmed Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh did it. In a season defined by enough-is-enough female energy - along with white male rage and aggrievement that is stomping back to 2016 levels - the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings were explosive on all fronts.

Kavanaugh's nomination, one of the most contentious in US history, had roiled Washington and the USA political scene for weeks, with Kavanaugh accused by a woman of sexually assaulting her when both were high school teenagers more than 30 years ago, allegations that in the end did not derail the appointment of the appellate court judge one level up to the high court.

"This is one of the reasons I chose him is because there is no one with a squeaky clean past like Brett Kavanaugh".
