Protesters hold a portrait of missing journalist and Riyadh critic Jamal Khashoggi during a demonstration in front of the Saudi Arabian consulate on Tuesday in Istanbul.

Earlier reports said Turkish police were focusing on 15 Saudi citizens who came to Turkey on two airplanes on the day of the incident.

But the ministry did not provide a timeline when that might happen.

Turkish officials suspect Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi consulate, allegations rejected by Saudi Arabia, which says he left the premises.

Turkey has not issued any proof to back up its claims.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor who had been published in the Arab and Western media, vanished last Tuesday after visiting the consulate to obtain official documents.

In July, the United Nations human rights office called on Saudi Arabia to release all peaceful activists, including women held for campaigning against a ban on driving as it was being lifted. He told her to call an adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan if he did not return.

A Turkish official separately told The Associated Press that authorities believe Jamal Khashoggi was slain at the Saudi Consulate, while another said it was a "high probability". Jamal Khashoggi has not been seen since he entered the building last week.

"We wouldn't normally broadcast an off-air conversation, but we've decided to make an exception, in light of the current circumstances", the British broadcaster said in a note published with the recording.

The door Khashoggi used appeared to be the main entrance of the consulate in Istanbul's 4th Levent neighborhood, a leafy, upscale district near the city's financial hub that's home to several other consulates.

Khashoggi had gone to the consulate in Istanbul for paperwork to marry his Turkish fiance. "Hopefully that will sort itself out", the president added. Relations were already strained after Turkey sent troops to the Gulf state of Qatar previous year in a show of support after its Gulf neighbors, including Saudi Arabia, imposed an embargo on Doha. Erdogan said of the consular officials at a news conference in the Hungarian capital, Budapest. "State Department senior officials have spoken with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through diplomatic channels about this matter".

David Rohde, executive editor of The New Yorker tweeted out, "The journalist Jamal Khashoggi had said that the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, has 'no tolerance or willingness to accommodate critics'".

The US president, Donald Trump, a robust ally of Saudi Arabia, who had pledged to stay out of the country's domestic affairs, made his first reference to the case on Monday, telling reporters he was "concerned" about "some pretty bad stories" about Khashoggi's fate.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, the Washington Post - where Khashoggi wrote columns after fleeing Saudi Arabia over fears of retribution for his critical commentary - reported USA intelligence intercepted communications of Saudi officials planning to abduct the prominent journalist.

In March, the State Department approved a $670 million arms sale to Saudi Arabia, part of a promised $110 billion in deals touted by Trump after his first presidential trip to the Saudi capital a year ago. The reports did not cite a source and there was no official confirmation.

Turkey and Saudi Arabia relations are already at a deep low. Repeating Trump's expression of "concern", Pompeo, who had just returned from a trip to Asia, called on the Saudi government "to support a thorough investigation of Mr. Khashoggi's disappearance and to be transparent about the results of that investigation".

Saudi Arabia says the allegations are baseless.
