Google is killing Google

Google exposed personal data of almost 500,000 and didn't disclose it Google Shutters Google+ Following Privacy Vulnerability

Google announced on Monday that it will sunset the consumer version of its social network Google+ by the end of August 2019 after a vulnerability exposed the personal data of up to 500,000 users between 2015 and March 2018. The Wall Street Journal's Douglas MacMillan and Robert McMillan report that Google was anxious about public perception and regulatory scrutiny, and that Google wanted to avoid comparisons with Facebook, which at the time was dealing with its own data privacy scandal. The move effectively puts the final nail in the coffin of a product that was launched in 2011 to challenge Facebook Inc. and is widely seen as one of Google's biggest failures.

Users who connect third-party apps with Google will get more granular control over what data gets shared. Instead of reporting this to subscribers of the service, Google made a decision to just let it slide so that it wouldn't be subject to investigation by regulatory agencies. It said it had no evidence that the data was misused or that any developer was aware of it or had exploited the leak. The bug was reported to have potentially allowed app developers to access profile data from even private accounts. However, it's possible that data were abused and Google just doesn't know about it yet.

A Google Australia spokesperson was unable to say how many local users were affected by the flaw, saying: "Every year, we send millions of notifications to users about privacy and security bugs and issues".

Hot on the heels of the Facebook security breach last month, there has been another faux pas involving Google+.

On Android, Google will limit apps ability to receive users call logs and short messaging service (SMS) data.

Eagles look sloppy, mediocre in 23-21 loss to Vikings
They lost because Wentz doesn't look as sharp this season as he did last season, before he tore two ligaments in his left knee. Joseph snatched Wentz's fumble out of the air and rumbled the distance to give the Vikings a 10-3 lead in the second quarter.

Earlier, the company had been reluctant to share data on how often Google+ was used, but now, facing the fall out of exposed data, the firm appears keen to play down its importance.

Google is shuttering the consumer-facing aspects of Google+ social networking platform in the wake of a data breach.

The flaw meant some Google profile information that users had thought was private, such as a person's email address, occupation, gender or age, could have been viewed by third parties, the company said in a post on a corporate blog.
