Saudi Arabia is preparing to acknowledge the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in a botched interrogation, CNN and the New York Times said, after US President Donald Trump speculated "rogue killers" may be responsible.

Trump despatched Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the kingdom for what the State Department described as "face to face meetings with the Saudi leadership" to find out what happened. Turkish officials have reported that Khashoggi was murdered in the consulate and dismembered, a charge the Saudis have denied.

As the United States and Turkey have ratched up pressure on the kingdom, Saudi companies, officials and princes have also gone online in a wave of solidarity with the ruling family.

"The denial was very, very strong", Trump told reporters. Trump said King Salman added that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also "had no knowledge" about Khashoggi's fate.

Turkish officials have accused Saudi Arabia of sending in a 15-man team to interrogate, kill, and dismember Khashoggi's body with a bone saw before flying it back to his native country. He was joined on the plane by David Hale, the under secretary for political affairs, and Tim Lenderking, a deputy assistant secretary for Arabian Gulf affairs, among others.

Some business executives from around the world have already refused to attend an upcoming Saudi-sponsored investment forum known as "Davos in the Desert" over the alleged murder.

However, reaction among Arab leaders - with most responding for the first time on Sunday as Saudi officials responded to Trump's comments - has been largely supportive of Saudi Arabia and critical of media outlets reporting the Turkish leaks, with some characterising the reports as a coordinated campaign against the kingdom.

The comments marked a break from the Trump administration's previous refusal to speculate over the fate of Khashoggi and came as the U.S. president is under growing pressure to take action on the case.

Late on Sunday, Saudi King Salman spoke by telephone with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about Mr Khashoggi.

Trump said Pompeo may go to Turkey after Saudi Arabia.

Rubio's comments come a day after Trump vowed "severe punishment" for the United States ally if they were found responsible.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio and Senator Jeff Flake, members of the Foreign Relations Committee, said Congress was prepared to move quickly and firmly if Trump failed to adequately respond to the October 2 disappearance of Khashoggi.

"The objective of (Sunday's) message broadcasted by the Saudi national media is twofold: one goal is to satisfy the domestic public opinion that Saudi Arabia and its royal family will not be humiliated and the other goal is to send a message to the US", Mitreski, researcher at the University of Sydney, told AFP.
