In East Java, three people were crushed to death in their sleep when the quake brought down buildings and damaged some 210 houses in Sumenep district, East Java police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera told AFP.

"The natural disaster happened early Thursday when they were sleeping and the quake suddenly rocked so they didn't have time to evacuate", he said, adding that damage caused by the tremor was not widespread.

Tremors were felt on the holiday island of Bali in the capital city of Denpasar.

The country is a particular hotspot for earthquakes as it is located on the Ring of Fire , a 40,000km area in the Pacific Ocean. An estimated 80,000 people have been displaced by the disaster, with many now living in tents outside their destroyed homes.

Finance Minister Asad Umar on Wednesday held a number of meetings on the sidelines of the World Bank/IMF Group annual meetings in Bali, Indonesia. "People were sleeping but got woken up by it", Tonny Akbar Mahendro told AFP.

In August, several major earthquakes on the island of Lombok, just east of Bali, caused widespread damage and killed hundreds of people.

The country is still reeling just two weeks after a devastating magnitude-7.5 quake and subsequent tsunami hit the island of Sulawesi last week.

The tremor comes after a 7.5-magnitude quake and subsequent tsunami struck off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi last month - around 1,000km northeast of the latest quake's epicentre - killing more than 2,000 people.
