The magnitude 7.0 quake in Papua New Guinea struck about 118 kilometers (74 miles) east of Kimbe, West New Britain, on the Pacific island nation.
A statement from the PTWC reads: "Government agencies responsible for threatened areas should take action to inform and instruct any coastal populations at risk in accordance with their own evaluation".
It earlier warned that waves up to about 30 centimetres were possible within 300 kilometres of the epicentre.
A spokesman for PNG's National Disaster Management Office in Port Moresby said there were no immediate reports of damage from the quake but these typically took several hours to reach the capital after a major shake.
He said there was no damage in the town, but officers had not yet been able to contact villages closer to the epicentre.
