The magnitude 7.0 quake in Papua New Guinea struck about 118 kilometers (74 miles) east of Kimbe, West New Britain, on the Pacific island nation.

A statement from the PTWC reads: "Government agencies responsible for threatened areas should take action to inform and instruct any coastal populations at risk in accordance with their own evaluation".

It earlier warned that waves up to about 30 centimetres were possible within 300 kilometres of the epicentre.

A spokesman for PNG's National Disaster Management Office in Port Moresby said there were no immediate reports of damage from the quake but these typically took several hours to reach the capital after a major shake.

A tsunami threat was triggered along the island's coasts.

No reports of damage or injuries have surfaced from the quake.

However, it added: "Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazard such as tsunamis, landslides and liquefaction that might have contributed to loses".

"We felt the quake a bit, but it was not too strong,"Constable Roy Michael told Reuters by phone from Rabaul police station".
