A man from Rockland County, New York was arrested Wednesday who police say planned to detonate a 200-pound bomb in Washington, DC on Election Day to protest the "direction of the country".

Authorities said Rosenfeld admitted to ordering large quantities of explosive black powder over the Internet, which he'd transported from New Jersey to his home in Tappan.

A series of letters and text messages sent during August and September also show Rosenfeld meant to detonate the device as a way to bring attention to a political ideology called "sortition," according to the news release, which it describesas a "theory that advocates the random selection of government officials".

Paul Rosenfeld, 56, of Tappan, meant to kill himself in the explosion and draw attention to his political beliefs, prosecutors said.

Federal law enforcement officials arrested a 56-year-old man in Hudson Valley, New York on Tuesday after learning that he was allegedly planning an election day suicide in Washington, D.C. because he was angered over the nation's politics.

Federal agents first learned of the plot after Rosenfeld described his plans in letters and text messages he sent to an unidentified person in Pennsylvania between August and September, the complaint said.

Assistant Director-in-Charge of the FBI's NY office, William Sweeney, Jr., said had Paul Rosenfeld, 56, been successful, he "could have claimed the lives of innocent bystanders and caused untold destruction".
