Research Shows Connection Between Parkinson's And Appendectomies
04 November, 2018, 13:42
The analysis of health records of more than 1 million individuals in Sweden found that having the appendix removed early in life is linked to a 19% reduced risk of developing Parkinson's disease.
In Parkinson's disease, toxic proteins accumulate in the brain and kill nerves, especially those linked to movement.
Researchers looked at a half million people in Sweden and found those whose appendix had been removed early in life were at an nearly a 20-percent lower risk of developing Parkinson's compared to those who still had their appendix. "There has to be some other mechanism or confluence of events that allows the appendix to affect Parkinson's risk", said Labrie.
Could the appendix be the cause of Parkinson's? "We're not promoting appendectomy as a way to protect against Parkinson's disease".
"Our results point to the appendix as a site of origin for Parkinson's and provide a path forward for devising new treatment strategies that leverage the gastrointestinal tract's role in the development of the disease", the study's lead author, Dr Viviane Labrie. "Among people who did develop Parkinson's disease, we found that the age of onset was delayed by an appendectomy on average by 3.6 years", study author Viviane Labrie, assistant professor at Van Andel Research Institute in MI, said during a conference call with reporters.
But why? The team further analysed surgical human appendix samples and found that they contained alpha-synuclein proteins-including shortened and mis-folded alpha-synucleins like the ones found in Lewy bodies.
The contents of people's appendix have been examined and it has been discovered that it has the toxic protein called alpha synuclein - that is found in the brains of Parkinson's patients.
However, Woulfe mentioned that not all investigators agree that these protein clumps spread along the nerves.
Again, don't go removing your appendix just yet. Given the appendix's potential role in maintaining the gut microbiome as well as in the immune system, perhaps there's actually some link between fluctuations in the microbiome or inflammation and Parkinson's as well, said Labrie.
