The final count is likely to leave Democrats with a narrow majority that could be hard to manage and preserve.

For the past two years, White House lawyers and the Trump Organisation have repeatedly rebuffed Democratic efforts to get even the most basic financial information on Trump's businesses.

She saluted "those dynamic, diverse and incredible candidates who have taken back the House for the American people".

Control of the committees - where the three lawmakers are now the highest-ranking Democrats - will hand them the unilateral power to issue subpoenas if they wish, as well as to demand documents and testimony from White House officials and important figures in Trump's campaign team and businesses. With control of the legislative apparatus in the House, they will also have more money and staff for investigations.

But former President Barack Obama was among those who directly targeted Trump and his personal style and beliefs, saying at one point "the character of the country is on the ballot".

But control of the Senate ensures Mr Trump can still make key appointments.

Who are the new faces in Congress?

Democrats have called for investigations of Cabinet officials' alleged misuse of taxpayer funds, Trump's immigration policies that have separated hundreds of migrant children from their parents at the U.S.

During the campaign, Pelosi urged candidates to focus on lowering health care costs and creating jobs with infrastructure investment, and she tamped down calls for impeachment.

Democrats knocked off at least 17 GOP incumbents, picking up moderate, suburban districts across the country.

Some Democrats said during their campaigns they would not back Pelosi, but it's not clear yet if there are any Democrats willing to challenge her for the post.

Rep. Elijah Cummings, the Maryland Democrat who is poised to take charge of the House Oversight Committee, said in a statement to The Associated Press that he intends to use the panel as "a check on the executive branch - not merely for potential criminal violations, but for much broader concerns, such as conflicts of interest, emoluments violations and waste, fraud and abuse".

Meanwhile, about three-quarters of nonwhite voters, with or without college degrees, voted for Democratic candidates in their districts.

Some Trump advisers were already anonymously assigning blame for the expected loss of more than 30 House seats, focusing on Corry Bliss, head of a political action committee that distributed money to House Republican candidates, and Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel. A record number of women were running for Senate, House, governorships and state legislative seats. In New York City, 29-year-old Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. If anything, he may well double down on his nativist message, because it didn't hurt the Republican campaigns across many states.

Ultra-Powerful Opioid Approved by FDA
The approval comes just a bit more than a year after President Donald Trump declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency. Public Citizen described the drug as "five to 10 times more potent than fentanyl and 1,000 times more potent than morphine".

The incoming class of lawmakers could have a stark impact on politics in the nation's capital, particularly within the Democratic Party, after a midterm election that was widely seen as a referendum on Trump's first term. He predicted an "invasion" from the migrant caravan making its way toward the US and decried the "radical" agenda of speaker-in-waiting Pelosi. Twenty-five percent described health care and immigration as the most important issues in the election.

In Virginia, political newcomer Jennifer Wexton defeated two-term GOP Rep. Barbara Comstock. Like other Democrats across the country, Spanberger emphasized protecting people with pre-existing conditions from being denied coverage or charged more by insurers.

To be sure, some of the Republican tax-cut authors are leaving Washington on a high note. The winners included Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a former Navy pilot and federal prosecutor who ran for a suburban Newark seat.

"We always knew these races are going to be close", said Rep. Katherine Clark of MA, co-chair of House Democrats' recruitment efforts.

But she added: "A Democratic Congress will work for solutions that bring us together because we have all had enough of division".
