SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook said Monday it had blocked some 30 accounts on its platform and 85 accounts on photo-sharing social network Instagram over concerns they may be linked to foreign entities and aimed at interfering in United States midterm elections.

Twitter said Saturday it deleted a "series of accounts" that attempted to share disinformation without giving a number. In August, another 652 pages also linked to Iran were taken down.

Posts on the accounts or pages, which included some hosted by Facebook-owned Instagram, focused mostly on "sowing discord" via strongly divisive issues rather than on particular candidates or campaigns.

Major online social platforms have been under intense pressure to avoid being used by "bad actors" out to sway outcomes by publishing misinformation and enraging voters.

Gleicher said the company will provide an update once it learns more, "including whether these accounts are linked to the Russia-based Internet Research Agency or other foreign entities".

"We see this as probably the biggest companywide reorientation since our shift from desktops to mobile phones", Samidh Chakrabarti, who's in charge of elections and civic engagement at Facebook, told The New York Times.
