He was already in the criminal justice system due to prior arrests in Florida, NPR's Gabriela Saldivia reported.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Cesar Sayoc, 56, of South Florida was arrested on October 26, five days after the first discovery of the improvised explosive devices were sent to targets including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, actor Robert De Niro and former President Barack Obama.

Though both the players have had their moments on the tour, they weren't till recently been real threats at Grand Slams. He has a win-loss record for 42-19 in 2018 and finished the Race to London at No 9.

President Trump called the mail bomb campaign "despicable".

Sayoc faces five counts of each of the six charges: use of a weapon of mass destruction, interstate transportation and receipt of an explosive, threatening interstate communications, illegal mailing of explosives, use of explosives to commit a felony, and use of a destructive device during and in furtherance of a crime of violence.

Prosecutors have accused Sayoc of mailing more than a dozen improvised explosive devices to targets including billionaire investor George Soros, former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Vice President Joe Biden. Packages were also mailed to CNN in NY and Atlanta. They also identified him by studying his social media accounts, analyzing the contents of the posts as well as their misspellings. A van linked to Sayoc has also emerged, showing heavy anti-Hillary stickers and pro-Trump stickers plastered all over its surface.

Investigators checked out Sayoc's laptop found in his van, finding a list of addresses that included those that matched those on the bomb packages hit list. He added that it took just five days to identify and arrest Sayoc. "He now faces justice from a nation of laws".

Sayoc appeared in NY earlier this week.

The charges include five counts of use of a weapon of mass destruction for each pipe bomb mailed to and intercepted in the NY area, targeting billionaire liberal donor George Soros, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, actor Robert de Niro, former CIA director John Brennan and former intelligence chief James Clapper. He has been held without bail since his capture.

Sayoc's attorney, federal defender Sarah Baumgartel, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
