U.S. to end refuelling of Saudi-coalition aircraft in Yemen war

US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis backed the decision and said the US Government was consulted.

Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soereide told Norwegian news agency NTB on Friday that the move was temporary until "a comprehensive assessment of recent developments in Saudi Arabia and the region and the unsettling situation in Yemen" is completed.

The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said early Saturday it had "requested cessation of inflight refueling" by the USA for its fighter jets after American officials said they would stop the operations amid growing anger over civilian casualties from the kingdom's airstrikes.

The move, announced by the coalition on Saturday and confirmed by Washington, comes at a time when Riyadh, already under scrutiny for civilian deaths in Yemen air strikes, is facing global furore and potential sanctions over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at its Istanbul consulate on October 2.

The Pentagon has provided refueling capabilities for about 20% of coalition planes flying sorties over Yemen.

The Saudi Arabian regime has killed another journalist who had exposed human rights violations in the country, according to the latest reports on Arab media. "Oh my God!" she concluded the tweet.

Any coordinated decision by Washington and Riyadh to halt to refueling could be an attempt by both countries to forestall further action by Congress.

Earlier in the day, Saudi media reported that the coalition had requested the United States to halt aerial refuelling of the coalition's aircraft, specifying that the decision had been made following consultations with Washington.

"It's clear the administration is finally beginning to recognize that it faces insurmountable opposition to continuing to fuel the war in Yemen", Win Without War said in a statement.

Despite this, and amid widespread calls from citizens and human rights groups, few Western countries have actually suspended arms agreements with the Saudi government.

United Nations envoy Martin Griffiths, who recently met with U.S. officials in Washington, is planning to invite the Saudi-backed government and the Huthi rebels to talks in Sweden this month.

The World Food Programme said on Thursday it planned to double food assistance for Yemen, aiming to reach up to 14 million people "to avert mass starvation".

Saudi strikes have hit public markets, hospitals and other nonmilitary targets, killing scores of civilians.

Mattis acknowledged "continued bipartisan interest from Congress", and said the Trump administration is "appreciative of the continued dialogue we have had with key members on this issue".

Aid groups warned of the plight of civilians in Yemen's contested Hodeida where casualties are mounting as a Saudi-led coalition is fighting to take the port city from the country's Shiite rebels.

However, Griffiths' effort to revive peace talks in September fell through after the Houthis failed to attend, arguing they didn't have guarantees for their safe return.
