A robot hospitalised 24 Amazon workers after it accidentally tore a can of bear repellent spray in a warehouse in New Jersey on Wednesday, officials said. Another 30 people were treated by emergency services at the scene.

In a statement, Robbinsville township spokesman John Nalbone told NJ.com the can released its fumes in a contained area on the third floor of the warehouse. Employees were reportedly relocated to a "safe place", though those "experiencing symptoms" were said to be treated "onsite" - presumably not in the warehouse full of bear repellant.

The employees were taken to five hospitals to be treated for exposure to concentrated capsaicin. As a precaution, some employees have been transported to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment. "We appreciate the swift response of our local responders".

Amazon's workforce now includes 575,700 employees globally as well as 80,000 robots known as "Kiva" which operate in warehouses.

"This is another outrageous example of the company putting profits over the health and safety of their workers, and we can not stand for this".

The Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union accused Amazon of "putting hard working people's lives at risk", claiming the robot had put its human colleagues in "life-threatening danger" and pointing out that the long-term effects of being sprayed with a can of bear repellant are "unknown".

The incident has again shone a spotlight on conditions in Amazon's warehouses, which have been criticised in the USA and the United Kingdom for poor working practices and a focus on productivity above worker safety.

Amazon maintains that it has strict safety guidelines and denies poor working conditions.

"This is another outrageous example of the company putting profits over the health and safety of their workers, and we can not stand for this", he added, emphasizing that as one of the world's biggest companies, Amazon "cannot continue to be let off the hook for putting hard working people's lives at risk".
