A few hours after the second video, Hart resigned, writing, "I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's Oscar's.... this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many fantastic talented artists".

'I sincerely apologise to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past'. "I chose to pass on the apology".

Hart initially failed to issue an apology, insisting he had addressed the situation "several times" already. "My team calls me, 'Oh my God, Kevin, everyone's upset by tweets you did years ago, '" he said in an Instagram video, apparently exasperated with the current times. "If it goes away, no harm, no foul".

Wednesday afternoon, comedian Kevin Hart was announced as the host for the upcoming 91st annual Academy Awards.

Hart repeatedly made anti-gay comments in a series of now-deleted tweets published between 2009 and 2011, even threatening his son with violence if he caught him playing with dolls, and insulted various celebrities by calling them "gay" or "fag".

Depicting folktales and local legends, artists will showcase ancient painting forms like Gond, Madhubani, Phad, Warli and Thangka. Presenting the art will be master craftsmen and craftswomen themselves, who are keeping these traditional arts alive.

"I'm nearly 40 years old". Hart said he "loves everybody".

"Keep in mind, I'm not homophobic, I have nothing against gay people, do what you want to do, but me, being a heterosexual male, if I can prevent my son from being gay, I will", Hart said.

Comedian and actor Billy Eichner said "a simple, authentic apology showing any bit of understanding or remorse would have been so simple".

When asked to apologize by online commenters and the Academy Awards itself, Hart initially refused. Murphy soon after exited, as well.

"Kevin Hart shouldn't have stepped down; he should have stepped up", writes GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in a statement shared on Twitter.

The most recent event - which ran from mid-October to early November - saw transactions falling by 1 per cent, or US$300 million, compared with last autumn.

The film academy moved up this year's ceremony to February 24, giving producers little time to find a replacement.

The Academy Awards is yet to comment on Hart's departure.

Insiders say that celebrities in Hollywood don't want to host the Oscars as it places "a target on your back", just as it did with Hart.

"I'm thankful that he acknowledged things that maybe weren't right, and he'll come back from this", Crews said. "I hope we can meet again".
