US President Donald Trump said Saturday he will soon notify Congress that he plans to end the NAFTA agreement with Mexico and Canada in favour of a new regional trade deal, setting up a potential clash on Capitol Hill.

Trump was on board Air Force One on his way back from Buenos Aires when he declared he would terminate NAFTA, a move that gives lawmakers six months to approve its replacement.

If Trump makes good on his threat, congress would need to pass the USMCA within six months; failure to act could lead to the cancellation of both agreements, impacting free trade between the three countries.

Trump told reporters the trade rules before NAFTA "work very well". 'It's been a disaster for the United States'.

Trump, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and former Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto signed the new U.S. -Canada-Mexico Agreement at the start of G20 meetings Friday in Argentina.

Getting the new NAFTA through Congress may be an uphill battle for the Trump administration, as Democrats won control of the House of Representatives in the fall midterm elections.

Other Democrats, backed by unions that oppose the pact, have called for stronger enforcement provisions for new labor and environmental standards, arguing that USMCA's state-to-state dispute settlement mechanism is too weak.

The issue could ultimately be decided by the courts.

Will Oklahoma join Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame in CFP?
Notre Dame did not play this weekend as the Irish finished the regular season with a 24-17 win at Southern Cal on November 24. We now know where the Tigers will play, as well as who the opponent will be in the CFP.

Trump says the new pact - known in Washington as the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) - will help US workers, especially in the auto industry, and better safeguard intellectual property.

The US Chamber of Commerce said a year ago that exiting NAFTA without a new deal could devastate American agriculture, cost hundreds of thousands of jobs and "be an economic, political and national-security disaster".

It remains unclear if President Trump can actually withdraw from NAFTA without congressional approval.
