Queen Elizabeth's 97-year-old husband Prince Philip has "no injuries of concern" Buckingham Palace said on Friday, after he visited hospital for a precautionary check up following a auto crash the day before.

A palace spokeswoman confirmed he had been in contact with the occupants of the other vehicle involved in the accident - two women who were injured, and a baby.

The Duke of Edinburgh, 97 - who's married to the 92-year-old British monarch Queen Elizabeth II - was seen by medical professionals at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn, the Palace told The Associated Press.

Prince Philip had initially been checked over by a doctor at Sandringham, who also reported no injuries, following what looked like quite a serious crash, where the Prince's Land Rover had crashed into a Kia and flipped onto it's side.

The Princess Royal's daughter, Zara Tindall, escaped with minor facial injuries when she overturned on a Gloucestershire country road in 2000.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: "Contact has been made privately with those traveling in the other auto and well wishes exchanged".

The 97-year-old was seen driving his brand new auto alone into the main entrance of gate to Sandringham at about 2.15pm.

Eyewitness Roy Warne helped the stricken duke out of his vehicle and said the royal, who was left very shocked by the accident, asked if everybody was all right.

The other driver involved in the collision "suffered cuts while the female passenger sustained an arm injury, both requiring hospital treatment", police said in a statement.

Two adults and a nine-month-old baby boy were travelling in the Kia and Philip, 97, was driving the Landrover.

Royal historian Hugo Vickers told CTV News that Prince Philip relishes his independence.

Before earning his private pilot's licence in 1959, he gained his helicopter wings with the Royal Navy in 1956 and was the first royal family member to ever fly out of Buckingham Palace Garden in a helicopter.

Warne added, "He was obviously shaken and then he went and asked if everyone else [in the other car] was alright".

Many who saw the incident online were appalled by the behavior of the young men and publicly voiced their concern on Twitter. According to a report by USA Today , the students were from Covington Catholic High School in Park Hills, Kentucky .

Asked what the prince had said during the rescue, Warne replied: "I can't remember, but it was nothing rude".

Following the collision, Philip saw a doctor at the Queen's Sandringham Estate, where he and the monarch are staying.

It is thought that his Land Rover may have been armoured, which could have helped protect him.

"Both drivers were breath tested and provided negative readings".

Police said Friday they were still investigating the incident and had not assigned blame.

At a meeting, coincidentally scheduled for Friday, Norfolk County Council approved plans to lower the speed limit from 60mph to 50mph, backed by speed cameras.

A motorist who swerved around the wreckage (aftermath of crash pictured) said the duke was "hanging from his seat" and saying "my leg is trapped".
