China is Growing Cotton on the Moon

The latest photos show that the cotton shoots are growing well.

Wu Weiren, general designer of China's lunar exploration program, said that three major aspects will be carried out by Chang'e 4 as the mission transfers from the commissioning phase to the scientific exploration phase.

Unfortunately, the sprout died after nine days upon the beginning of the lander's first lunar night on Sunday. According to China's official news agency 'Xinhua, ' China had launched the Chang E-3 in 2013.

After Chang'e-5 returns lunar rocks from the surface the next mission, China will launch Chang'e-6 to bring samples back from the south pole of the moon.

So basically, the crops will try to form a mini biosphere - an artificial, self-sustaining environment. Light was channeled into a tube in the canister, allowing a cotton seed to sprout. Dubbed a moon surface micro-ecological circle, the 18-centimeter high aluminum alloy cylinder contains silkworm eggs and seeds for potatoes and rockcress (Arabidopsis thaliana, a flowering plant related to mustard and cabbage).

Professor Xie Xin, dean of the Advanced Technology Research Institute of Chongqing University, highlighted the importance of the researchers' findings, during a press conference on Tuesday.

"I think there's certainly a great deal of interest in using the Moon as staging post, particularly for flights to Mars, because it's relatively near the Earth".

When lunar daytime begins the temperatures will rise and the organisms will gradually decompose. NASA says the moon's temperatures near its equator can dive to -238 Fahrenheit (-150 Celsius). Chang'e is a name of the Chinese moon goddess.

The probe is now in sleep mode and will remain so till the lunar night lasts.
