Deadly fire prompts evacuation at French resort of Courchevel

According to the Savoie prefecture, the fire started before dawn in a building housing seasonal workers located in the heart of the Alpine town.

It spread to two nearby buildings 'extremely fast leading to panicked occupants jumping out of windows to save their lives, ' said local government official Frederic Loiseau.

Officials said the victims had been from the 60 or so mainly young people housed in the building to work in hotels and restaurants in the resort during the ski season.

This morning, two bodies were found in the charred wreckage but they are yet to be identified.

Three of the four seriously injured people were airlifted to hospital by helicopter. A witness comments that one of the people stuck in the building was saved by firemen while a woman cried for help on the third floor.

French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner expressed his condolences and praised the local firefighters for getting the fire under control.

Footage from the scene shows fire crews using ladders to try and rescue people from inside the three-storey building.

The resort consists of four villages, the most famous being Courchevel 1850 which is also the highest.
