Guzman's lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, also questioned Cifuentes about his prior statements from another debriefing a year ago, where Cifuentes questioned his own memory about the circumstance of the bribe.

Mexico's outgoing President Enrique Pena Nieto waves while arriving to the Congress for the inauguration of Mexico's new President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, in Mexico City, Mexico December 1, 2018.

His former chief of staff, however, took to social media to reject the accusation.

Cifuentes acknowledged that he first spoke with prosecutors about the bribery allegation when he began cooperating with USA authorities in 2016.

Cifuentes said yes, that is what Guzman told him.

Jeremy Corbyn accuses Theresa May of being 'in denial' over Brexit deal
Corbyn dismissed her offer as too little, too late. "Whatever option you put to the House of Commons it would be voted down". A general election would "deepen divisions when we need unity, it would bring chaos when we need certainty", Mrs May said.

Cifuentes also said testified that Guzman once told him that he had received a message from Pena Nieto saying that he did not have to live in hiding anymore.

Alex Cifuentes, a Colombian drug trafficker who describes himself as Guzman's former "right-hand, left-hand man", claimed that Pena Nieto initially asked for $250 million, and Guzman later boasted about paying him $100 million in October 2012, when he was still president-elect, Reuters reports.

"The statements by the Colombian drug trafficker in NY are false, defamatory and absurd", said Guzman.

When the defense made those arguments, Pena Nieto was still president and his office denied the charges.

Pena Nieto at the time called the claim "completely false and defamatory".

The prosecution tried to have Lichtman's opening statement thrown out, but Judge Brian Cogan told the jury to take the defendant's words lightly.

When the Chapo trial began in November, Lichtman argued that Guzman was the scapegoat of corrupt Mexican governments, turncoat colleagues and the US Drug Enforcement Administration. He also said that it had been a priority since the beginning of Nieto's term as president.

At the start of the trial, Lichtman suggested jurors would hear testimony about bribes paid to both Nieto and former Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

He famously broke out of jail twice, including in 2015 when he escaped through a mile-long tunnel that had been dug to his cell. The witness said the bribe was never paid and Guzman subsequently ordered the associate killed, though the hit was never carried out.
