When it comes to poultry, it suggests an intake of just 29g per day, or a 69% cut back on our consumption of these products.

Can we eat in a way that works for our planet as well as our bodies, asks the EAT-Lancet commission that has brought together 37 experts from 16 countries to develop, for the first time, global scientific targets for healthy diets and sustainable food production. To be published on Thursday, the EAT- Lancet Commission report calls for a dietary shift that recommends reduction of global consumption of red meat by 50 per cent and overall increase in consumption of legumes, nuts, fruit, and vegetables, with the changes needed varying according to region. "A combination of policies and practises will be needed to enable farmers to meet their ambitions but we must not forget the impact of a changing climate on food production - we only have to look back to the drought past year to see the effect it can have".

Current diets, with a growing emphasis on Western-style high calorie foods laden with saturated fats, are pushing the planet beyond its natural boundaries while causing ill-health and early death, say the researchers.

Around the world, people eat far too much red meat and sugar, and nowhere near enough nuts, fruits and vegetables, according to a report released Wednesday.

"The world's diets must change dramatically", Dr Walter Willett, a Harvard University nutrition expert who was part of the commission, said in a statement.

Meat Industry Ireland (MII) has come out swinging in response to the publication of a controversial scientific report outlining what it claims are "healthy diets" from sustainable food systems. 'Lack of agricultural understanding " But the Sustainable Food Trust, a United Kingdom charity advocating sustainable farming, has criticised the report due to its "fundamental lack of agricultural understanding". "There is no silver bullet for combating harmful food production practices, but by defining and quantifying a safe operating space for food systems, diets can be identified that will nurture human health and support environmental sustainability". In order to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris agreement, the authors say, the world must drastically change the way it eats.

He added: "Their desire to limit people to eating one tenth of a sausage a day leaves us in no doubt that we are dealing with fanatics".

"Transformation to healthy diets by 2050 will require substantial dietary shifts".

We know that diet is the key to unlocking your healthiest self, but this time, researchers have found a diet that could actually save the world. The diet allows for 2,500 calories per day, with variation, and puts limitations on animal based foods such as hamburgers (one per week), fish (two servings per week) and eggs (fewer than four per week).

The report found adhering to this "flexitarian" diet could prevent about 11 million premature deaths annually. For example, people in North America eat nearly 6.5 times the recommended amount of red meat, while people in South Asia eat only half the amount suggested by the planetary diet.

Professor Tim Lang, one of the authors from City, University of London, said: "The food we eat and how we produce it determines the health of people and the planet, and we are now getting this seriously wrong".

The report warned that the way food is produced now drives climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution (because of over-application of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilisers) and unsustainable changes in water and land use.
