In December 2018, the company refused to comment on reports that it was preparing to cut thousands of jobs in the New Year.

JLR also revealed that electric drive units will be produced at the i54 engine factory in Wolverhampton as it increases its investment in electrification.

And Ford signalled "significant" cuts among its 50,000 European workforce under plans to make it more competitive and make its business more sustainable.

JLR's figures were also dented by the introduction of European emissions standards known as WLTP, which resulted in a fall in demand for diesel cars.

There were reports past year that thousands of jobs could be axed as part of a £2.5 billion savings plan amid falling sales in China and a drop in demand for diesel cars, but the figure was not confirmed.

With the fallout from the VW emissions scandal continuing to be felt, United Kingdom sales of diesel cars declined by 29.6 per cent in 2018.

Armstrong was quoted by the Financial Times as saying the number of layoffs would be in the "thousands" but declined to repeat that quantity in a conference call with reporters, saying only that there would be a "substantial impact" on the workforce.

Unite national officer Des Quinn said: "Ford's workforce in the United Kingdom is world class in making and developing engines and gearboxes that are shipped all over the globe".

"We expect the immediate impact on Ford's United Kingdom operations to be limited".

Auto giant Jaguar Land Rover will announce up to 5,000 job cuts later on Thursday, according to reports.

The automaker said it would start off by offering voluntary redundancies to United Kingdom workers. That could get worse in a hard Brexit, while carmakers across the globe grapple with a downturn in China and pressure to invest in electrified and autonomous cars.

Beyond the £2.5 billion now being sought, rumours abound that Jaguar could be reincarnated as an all-electric brand in the not-too-distant future, better positioning it to deliver on future customer demand and lessening the burden it now places on the far-healthier Land Rover.
