Lenovo in the Lead of the Global PC Market in Q4

Gartner: Not a very merry Christmas for PC market as chip shortage bites, small biz vanishes PC sales struggle yet again
Rhonda Young | 13 January, 2019, 21:15

According to Gartner numbers published today, vendors suffered a year-long decline of 1.3 per cent in shipments to 259.4 million units, and in the final quarter, shipments of 68.6 million units were down 4.3 per cent in what is supposed to be the busiest time of the year for sales.

"Just when demand in the PC market started seeing positive results, a shortage of CPUs (central processing units) created supply chain issues", Mikako Kitagawa, senior principal analyst at Gartner, said in a statement.

PC shipments to the US, EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) and Asia-Pacific markets were 14.2 million units, 20.9 million units and 24.2 million units respectively in the fourth quarter of 2018. Demand should push forward into this year if CPU availability improves.

With this, users can watch traditional 2D movies in a virtual theater using VR headsets such as the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift. However, Kempf said the team doesn't want to create a complete media center with specific tools for media library management.

For the holiday period, Gartner has worldwide PC shipments at 68.6 million units, down 4.3 percent YoY. In India, a significant drop in consumer demand together with high inventory remaining in the channels led to a stronger than expected decline in the consumer and SMB segments, while Intel supply shortages led to a drop in sales to the enterprise customers.

"Political and economic uncertainties in some countries dampened PC demand", Kitagawa said.

Apple's global market share fell during the fourth quarter when compared to the same period a year ago while its United States market share increased.

According to Gartner, the PC sales industry was influenced negatively by two trends.

This was due to a strong quarter in the U.S. for Lenovo, whereas HP suffered declines in shipments in most key regions - with Asia being the notable exception.

The top three vendors of PCs - Lenovo, HP, and Dell - increased their share of the global PC market, accounting for 63 percent of PC shipments in Q4 2018, up from 59 percent at the same time a year ago. HP, Apple, and Acer, taking the second, fourth, and fifth spots, respectively, each saw declines.

AT&T to end all location-data sales to data brokers
All of this comes after Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T promised to end its contracts with aggregation companies. T-Mobile reportedly is winding down this practice and will stop it altogether in March.

Lenovo maintained its status as the top OEM in the traditional PC space, and one of only two top 5 companies to post growth in the quarter compared to a year ago. IDC says that both desktop and notebook shipments from the Cupertino company saw year-over-year-year declines in the fourth quarter. Asus shipments sank 10.7 percent to 4.211 million, while its market share declined to 6.1 percent from 6.6 percent.
