The man, who had been suffering from regular bouts of backache throughout is life, chose to take matters into his own hands, purchased a hypodermic needle online and started injecting himself with his own semen.

The 33-year-old man admitted he had been self-medicating for 18 months before seeking help at a hospital in Dublin and that he had developed the "innovative" method without advice from a doctor. A search of more eclectic internet sites and forums found no other documentation of semen injection for back pain treatment or other uses.

After dutifully reporting the first ever case of a man injecting himself with his own semen to try to treat his back pain, the authors offered a warning: It's unsafe for the untrained to perform intravenous injections on themselves, especially when they're injecting things that aren't supposed to be injected into veins, like semen.

However, the "doses" caused a red rash on his right upper arm.

The medics found that the failed multiple attempts at injecting the bodily fluid caused the leakage of semen into the soft tissue and a build-up of fluid under the man's skin on his right arm and a dose of cellulitis, a common bacterial skin infection.

Eighteen months after starting the treatment, the man sought medical attention after a severe and sudden onset of lower back pain.

Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool's Premier League rivals that the leaders are laying the foundations for long-term success. He's outside training, his running looks much better since he had this other little surgery. "He can sign professional now".

Dr Dunne described the case as "unique" and said that it's also "the first ever described case of intravascular semen injection and associated abscess in the medical literature". The man was given intravenous antimicrobial treatment, but left hospital without draining the wound.

The Irish Medical Journal noted the only past examples of semen injection occurred in 1945 when human ejaculate was injected into female rats and rabbits.

Dr Dunne also said that the lessons of the case could be applied "on a broader scale" as it demonstrates the risks involved with medical experimentation "prior to extensive clinical research".
